Dating pool by country: a comparison of the largest countries

What does the same search look like in different countries? One standard profile, no other filters, the 30 most populous countries, and a plain statement of how much each row can be trusted.

The short answer

For a man looking for women aged 28 to 38, the largest absolute pool among the 30 most populous countries is in China, with about 31 million available single women. Per 1,000 inhabitants the pool is largest in South Africa (37.3) and smallest in Pakistan (13.6). The data year is 2025; confidence differs by row and is shown in the tables.

What the columns mean

The profile is the same for every country: a person looking for the other sex, aged 28 to 38, with no other filter. Available singles are the people of that sex and age who are attracted to the searcher’s gender and are neither married nor partnered. Single share is the part of the people attracted to the searcher’s gender that is available. Per 1,000 inhabitants divides the available singles by the total population of the country, children included.

Orientation is part of the calculation: a gay man or a lesbian woman would see different counts, because what counts is then the share of men, or women, who are attracted to their own gender. Use the calculator for those searches; the standard tables show the most common case.

Sorted by the number of available single women. Counts are model estimates rounded to three significant digits.

The “Women aged 28–38” column counts everybody in that group before sexual orientation is taken into account. “Single share” and “Available singles” apply only after that step.

The same profile reversed. Differences to the table above come from the sex ratio at these ages, from the different married and partnered shares of men and women, and from orientation shares.

The “Men aged 28–38” column counts everybody in that group before sexual orientation is taken into account. “Single share” and “Available singles” apply only after that step.

How to read the differences

Three effects drive the table. Size: a larger population has a larger pool in absolute terms, which is why the most populous countries lead the counts. Age structure: a country with many people in their thirties has more people in the age group per inhabitant, so the per-inhabitant column favours young populations. Relationship patterns: where people marry or partner early, the single share at 28 to 38 is low, and where they do so later it is high.

None of these says anything about how easy it is to find a partner in a country. Culture, geography, mobility and the number of people who are actually looking all matter, and the model has no way to see them.

Data quality and what the confidence column means

Every country file carries a data year and a confidence grade. Of the 30 countries in the tables, 14 are graded high, 13 medium and 3 low. “High” means population, relationship and orientation inputs rest on good national statistics. “Low” means that parts of the file had to be inferred from neighbouring countries or similar economies. The calculator turns the grade into an uncertainty band of about ±12% (high), ±25% (medium) or ±45% (low) on counts like these, so a medium or low row should be read as a range, not a point.

The tables show one data year per row. Population figures follow the UN World Population Prospects and are refreshed with the dataset; this page updates when that happens.

Why not a page for every city and country

We publish country pages only where the data can carry the statement. For most countries the inputs (age and sex structure, married and partnered shares) exist only at the national level, so a city page would repeat the country number under a different name. The calculator itself covers 191 countries; start there for anything not listed here.
